Overview
The Biomechanics research area applies engineering principles to analyze the forces and flows acting on human motion and physiological systems, and realizes them through computational modeling and robotics for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. We mathematically model biological fluid and mechanical systems—such as cardiovascular circulation models, computational simulations of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and artificial organs and blood pumps—and quantitatively assess human movement through smart-technology-based motion analysis. Our research also develops rehabilitation and surgical robotics, including robotic gait assistance for Parkinson’s disease and robotic rehabilitation of the hemiplegic arm, as well as soft robotic bioimplants grounded in computational modeling, to restore and support impaired bodily functions. Ultimately, this research area aims to quantitatively understand human function through the convergence of mechanics, control, and robotics, contributing to personalized rehabilitation and functional-recovery medical technologies.
